Supply, Installation & Commissioning of Synchronizing Panels – ESP Wellsite Power Stations

BN Company was awarded contract COOF 4500365117 for the supply, installation and commissioning of twenty (20) synchronizing panels — ten (10) rated at 1250KVA and ten (10) rated at 800KVA — for ESP wellsite power stations across the Zubair Oil Field, on behalf of Eni Iraq B.V. Project Overview

(ZFOD). Each panel synchronizes and shares load between three power sources: two generator sets and the national grid connection, ensuring continuous and stable power supply to the electrical submersible pump (ESP) wells.

The synchronizing panels are built around a Deep Sea Electronics (DSE) synchronization and control platform, rated at 400V. Motorized Air Circuit Breakers (ACB) are used for source switching on each incomer. The system automatically checks voltage, frequency and phase sequence before permitting breaker closure, then manages load sharing between the connected sources to maintain reliable power availability at each wellsite.

Project Information

Scope of Work

  • Supply of 20 synchronizing panels (10 × 1250KVA + 10 × 800KVA) per COOF 4500365117.
  • Panel fabrication and factory testing, rated at 400V with busbars sized to each panel's capacity.
  • Delivery of panels to ESP wellsite locations across the Zubair Oil Field.
  • Installation of panels at designated wellsite power stations.
  • Integration of Deep Sea Electronics (DSE) synchronizing and load-sharing controllers.
  • ACB installation, control wiring, and protection relay configuration.
  • Functional testing and commissioning, including automatic synchronization checks, load-sharing tests and protection tests.
  • Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) and handover documentation.

Synchronizing Panel – Technical Description

Each synchronizing panel is designed to safely parallel and share load between two generator sets and the national grid, giving the wellsite three available power sources with automatic changeover and synchronization.

Electrical Rating

  • Rated voltage: 400V, 3-phase, 50Hz.
  • Panel capacities: 1250KVA and 800KVA variants (10 panels of each rating).
  • Main incomers (2 × generator + 1 × grid) switched via Air Circuit Breakers (ACB).

Synchronization & Control

  • Controller: Deep Sea Electronics (DSE) multi-source synchronizing and load-sharing controller.
  • Automatic check-synchronizing — voltage, frequency and phase-angle matching — before breaker closure.
  • Manual and automatic synchronizing modes, with load-sharing and load-demand control between generators.
  • Mains/genset changeover logic with breaker interlocking between the three sources to prevent paralleling faults.
  • Protection functions: over/under voltage, over/under frequency, reverse power and overcurrent.

Panel Construction

Local Control & Monitoring

The DSE controller's front-panel display gives wellsite operators full local visibility and control of the synchronization process. Key features available to the operator include:

  • Unit and breaker status indication (open/closed) for each of the three sources.
  • Live metering of voltage, frequency and current per source.
  • Alarm and event log for fault diagnosis and maintenance history.
  • Manual synchronizing and breaker control pushbuttons, alongside the automatic mode.

Project Value

The installation of these synchronizing panels strengthens power availability at the Zubair Oil Field ESP wellsites by enabling safe, automatic synchronization between the generator sets and the national grid connection. Automated load-sharing and synchronization reduce the risk of paralleling faults, protect the generating sets and downstream ESP loads, and reduce reliance on manual operator intervention. Local monitoring through the DSE controllers improves fault diagnosis and supports a faster response to abnormal operating conditions, improving overall wellsite uptime.

Project Description

BN Company executed the supply, installation and commissioning of twenty (20) synchronizing panels (10×1250KVA + 10×800KVA) for ESP wellsite power stations at the Zubair Oil Field, under contract COOF 4500365117 for Eni Iraq B.V. (ZFOD). Each 400V panel uses Deep Sea Electronics (DSE) synchronizing controllers and Air Circuit Breakers (ACB) to automatically synchronize and share load between two generator sets and the national grid, ensuring reliable, continuous power supply to the ESP wells.
