Power Backup For The North DGS (DGS-N)

BN executed the EPC works for the DGS-N Backup Power Supply project to enhance power reliability and maintain production continuity for critical loads associated with Trains 1 & 2 at the North Degassing Station. The solution introduces two dedicated containerized Local Electrical Rooms (LERs), one s — Zubair Oil Field, Iraq.

Website Project Brief

Project Overview

BN executed the EPC works for the DGS-N Backup Power Supply project to enhance power reliability and maintain production continuity for critical loads associated with Trains 1 & 2 at the North Degassing Station. The solution introduces two dedicated containerized Local Electrical Rooms (LERs), one serving SS-01 and one serving SS-02, each integrating a new 6.6 kV switchgear system and the auxiliary systems required for safe, autonomous operation.

System Configuration

  • 2 x containerized LERs installed adjacent to DGS-N substations SS-01 and SS-02.
  • 6.6 kV switchgear assemblies procured from Siemens and factory tested prior to site integration.
  • Two incomers per switchgear: one from the existing grid/plant 6 kV system and one from the diesel-generator backup source.
  • 2 MW, 0.4 kV diesel generator source connected through a 2.5 MVA, 0.4/6.6 kV step-up transformer.
  • Automatic source management, synchronization and load sharing between the diesel-generator source and the grid supply.
  • Integrated protection, interlocking, control, UPS/DC supply, LV distribution, HVAC, fire alarm/firefighting and lighting systems within the LERs.
  • MV, LV and control cable installation, terminations, intertrip/interlock circuits, protection interfaces and earthing works required to connect the new system to SS-01 and SS-02.

Siemens FAT & LER Integration

Functional Operation

Under normal conditions, the new 6.6 kV switchgear is supplied from the plant/grid source. If the main source becomes unavailable or unstable, the backup diesel-generator system can be brought into service through the 2.5 MVA step-up transformer. The switchgear control system manages the source-transfer sequence and provides synchronization and coordinated load sharing when parallel operation is required. This automated philosophy is intended to maintain supply to the selected essential process loads and improve continuity of operation for DGS-N Trains 1 & 2.

Website-Ready Description

BN executed the DGS-N Backup Power Supply project at Zubair Oil Field to improve electrical resilience and maintain production continuity for critical loads serving Trains 1 & 2. The project introduced two fully integrated Local Electrical Rooms (LERs), each housing SIEMENS 6.6 kV switchgear together with protection, control, UPS/DC, LV distribution, HVAC, lighting and fire-protection systems. Each switchgear is configured with dual incomers - one from the plant/grid network and one from a 2 MW diesel generator connected through a 2.5 MVA, 0.4/6.6 kV step-up transformer. The automated control scheme provides source transfer, synchronization and coordinated load sharing, while BN delivered the associated MV/LV cabling, protection interfaces, interlocks, earthing, testing and commissioning works for integration with DGS-N Substations 1 and 2.
