Project Overview

BN engineered and delivered a compact Local Control Panel (LCP) solution for wellhead and production-line protection applications at the Zubair Oil Field. The solution was developed in response to the Client’s requirement for a smaller, practical, and cost-efficient field protection system while maintaining the essential safety and control functions required for well operation.

Scope of Work

  • • Engineering design and development of the LCP arrangement in accordance with the required well protection philosophy and field operating conditions.
  • • Supply, assembly, fabrication/manufacturing and workshop preparation of the Local Control Panels and associated pneumatic/hydraulic components, tubing, fittings, instruments and accessories.
  • • Field installation and connection of the LCPs to the wellhead and production-line interfaces.
  • • Configuration of the local protection logic to initiate isolation/shutdown when abnormal high-pressure conditions are detected.
  • • Functional testing, leak checks, calibration/verification, pre-commissioning and final commissioning of the installed system.
  • • Performance verification to confirm correct operation of the pressure sensing, local actuation and shutdown functions.

Purpose and Operating Philosophy

The LCP provides a local, independent protection layer at the well site. It is connected to the wellhead and production line so that pressure conditions can be monitored directly at the source. When the configured high-pressure condition is reached, the panel initiates the required isolation action to close the relevant well valve and protect the production system from abnormal operating conditions.

By locating the control and protection function close to the wellhead, the system supports fast response, simple field operation and reduced dependence on large remote control packages for basic shutdown duties. The compact arrangement also helps minimize footprint, installation complexity and project cost while preserving the required operational safety function.

LCP Assembly and Inspection

BN personnel carrying out inspection, assembly checks and functional verification of the LCP units.

Technical Solution

The supplied Local Control Panels were designed as compact field-mounted units incorporating the essential instrumentation and pressure-control components required for local well protection. Typical panel functions include pressure indication, pressure sensing, accumulator/pressure storage, control valves, isolation valves, stainless-steel tubing and associated fittings arranged within a robust outdoor enclosure.

Key Benefits of the BN Solution

  • • Compact footprint suitable for installation close to the wellhead.
  • • Cost-efficient alternative where a full wellhead control package is not required.
  • • Fast local response to abnormal pressure conditions.
  • • Simplified operation and maintenance due to a clear, accessible panel arrangement.
  • • Modular design that can be adapted to different well and production-line configurations.
  • • Field-oriented design suitable for oilfield environmental and operational conditions.
  • • Integration capability with existing shutdown philosophy and upstream/downstream isolation requirements.

BN Engineering & Execution Capability

This project demonstrates BN’s capability to convert a specific operational requirement into a practical engineered field solution. BN covered the complete execution cycle from engineering and panel development through assembly, installation, testing and commissioning. The work required coordination between instrumentation engineering, panel fabrication, tubing and fittings installation, field interfacing, functional testing and final start-up support.

BN’s instrumentation team has hands-on experience with wellhead protection systems, local control panels, hydraulic and pneumatic circuits, pressure instrumentation, field tubing, valve interfaces and shutdown applications. This combination of design and field execution capability enables BN to provide customized systems that are technically fit-for-purpose, maintainable, and optimized for the Client’s operational and commercial requirements.
