EPC - Wellhead Control Panel (WHCP) Installation at Zubair Oil Field Wells

EPC instrumentation, well control, protection, monitoring and commissioning โ€” Zubair Oil Field, Iraq.

Instrumentation & Well Control Systems

Project Overview

BN executed engineering, installation, testing and commissioning activities for Wellhead Control Panel (WHCP) systems at oil wells within the Zubair Oil Field. The WHCP provides a dedicated local interface for safe operation of the wellhead valves, hydraulic control of the shutdown functions, pressure protection and monitoring of critical production parameters. The installed system supports both local field operation and integration of selected instrumentation signals with the wider production monitoring and control architecture.

Scope of Work

  • Engineering design and review of the WHCP installation, interfaces, control philosophy and field connections.
  • Installation of the WHCP package inside the well yard, including mechanical positioning, supports and associated field interfaces.
  • Connection of the WHCP to the well X-tree / wellhead valves for hydraulic actuation and shutdown control.
  • Installation and termination of instrumentation, electrical and control interfaces required for the WHCP operation.
  • Hydraulic and nitrogen system connection, pressure setting and verification for the WHCP operating circuits.
  • Testing of local push-button commands for opening and closing the applicable well valves in accordance with the approved operating philosophy.
  • Functional verification of high-pressure and low-pressure protection logic and associated shutdown functions.
  • Loop checking, calibration support, functional testing, pre-commissioning and commissioning of the complete WHCP system.
  • Integration and verification of monitoring signals for well operating conditions and production-related parameters.

WHCP System Objectives and Functionality

The WHCP is installed to provide a reliable, field-level control and protection layer between the wellhead equipment and the production control system. It allows operators to safely command the well valves locally while maintaining the protection functions required to shut in the well when abnormal pressure conditions are detected.

The package uses pressurized hydraulic circuits, supported by nitrogen where required by the design, to operate the wellhead shutdown valves. Pressure switches, transmitters and associated control devices enable the panel to supervise hydraulic availability and process conditions, helping protect the well against high- and low-pressure scenarios.

By centralizing valve control, shutdown logic and field indications in a dedicated panel, the WHCP improves operating consistency, facilitates maintenance and troubleshooting, and provides a structured interface for future or existing remote monitoring systems.

Control, Monitoring and Remote Integration

The WHCP can provide the required field signals for transfer to the control center of the associated degassing station. Depending on the approved project architecture, these signals can be collected through an RTU and communicated to a SCADA or plant control system for centralized supervision, alarm handling and operating awareness.

BN Experience and Capability

Through execution of WHCP projects in an operating oilfield environment, BN has developed practical experience across engineering, field installation, hydraulic and instrumentation interfacing, protection logic verification, commissioning and operational handover. BN teams coordinate mechanical, electrical and instrumentation activities to deliver a complete well-control solution that can be safely operated locally and integrated with higher-level monitoring systems.

  • Instrumentation and control engineering for oil and gas well facilities.
  • WHCP installation, hydraulic tubing, nitrogen / hydraulic connections and field interfacing.
  • Wellhead valve control and shutdown system testing.
  • Pressure instrumentation, switches, transmitters, gauges and protection verification.
  • RTU / SCADA signal interfacing and remote monitoring readiness.
  • Loop checking, calibration, functional testing, commissioning and troubleshooting.
  • Execution under oilfield HSE requirements and coordination with operations teams during energization and start-up.
